Kecak

Indonesia is a beautiful country which has lots of culture and many kinds of traditional dances in any places. One of the most popular dances is Kecak dance in Bali which has no musical accompaniment, because the rhythm is provided by a chanting 'monkey' chorus and the polyrhythmic of the chanting provides the name 'Ke-chak' which the sound is come from the mouth.

The Kecak itself is taken from the Ramayana which prince Rama, a warrior and rightful hire to the throne of Ayodya, goes hunting for a golden deer and his beautiful wife is kidnapped by the evil Rawana who want to have Sita (Rama's wife) to be his wife, and Rama rounds up his armies to defeat those evil. The character of Rama wears green dancing in the center of the circle and the golden seer in yellow.

The Kecak is such fascinating dance to watch because there are fifty or so men in the checkered pants which both the choir and the props providing the music for the story in the series of constant vocal chants that change with the mood of the actor and also the change of the dance movement.

They wave their arms to simulate fire and reposition themselves around the stage to represent wind and fire, prison cells, and unseen hand of protection from the Gods and this dance is played in five acts. It last roughly 45 minutes and become the most popular dance to attract the foreign traveler who come to Bali. Kecak dances has broadly famous to the foreign because they love such kind of culture which they can not found in their country.

Lovina Beach

Not as widely visited as south Bali, north Bali has a distinct and unique character of its own. Lovina, a sparsely populated stretch of pristine black sand beach, has become the destination of choice for tourists wishing to escape the Bali's busy south. Lovina Beach is home to quaint hotels, secluded resorts and vacation villas all built on or near the beach. Visitors to north Bali will discover that the region offers a much more rewarding vacation experience than the cookie cutter package tours found in south Bali.

Here are five facts that you probably don't know about Lovina:

1. The name "Lovina" is a relatively recent development started by a forward thinking government official in the 1950's. Lovina is essentially the name given to a 10 kilometre stretch of beach located west of Bali's historic capital Singaraja. This area was once made up of seven tiny fishing villages: Temukus, Kalibukbuk, Anturan, Pemaron, Tukad Mungga, Banyualit and Kaliasem, which have combined to form the resort town of Lovina. Kalibukbuk is the most built up area, and can be considered the main hub of Lovina.

2. Unlike the south of Bali, the beach at Lovina is comprised of black sand. Whereas white-sand beaches are created out of the remnants of corals and dead sea-crustaceans, black sand beaches originate from volcanic lava flows.

3. An ornate dolphin sculpture in Lovina's town centre and the abundance of carved dolphin figurines for sale is a clear indication of the area's affinity for dolphins. The calm waters off the Lovina's coast are home to many dolphin pods. The friendly mammals love frolicking around passing boats, making dolphin sighting one of the most popular tourist attractions in Lovina.

4. Lovina lies a few kilometres west of the city of Singaraja, the Dutch colonial seat of power in Bali. Always worth a visit for anyone staying in Lovina, Singaraja retains the look and feel of an old Dutch colonial city. Singaraja also holds the distinction of being Bali's most multi ethnic city, with clear European, Arab and Chinese influences - testament to the city's importance as a major trading hub in days of yore.

5. Lovina is cheaper than the rest of Bali! This should come as welcome news to budget travellers as it allows them to get the quintessential Bali experience without having to stay in the ever increasingly expensive south. Hotels, meals and the cost of living in general are lower in Lovina.

This majestic temple complex nestles at the foot of Mount Agung. It is the place where the Hindus come for blessing and the tourists come for its unique ancient architecture and atmosphere. It is the centre of Balinese Hindu life and the source of spiritual energy. It is a must see on any visitors agenda

A lontar manuscript indicates that in 158AD Rsi Markandiya came to an island that had a large of mountains from east to west and which he could see from his meditation spot in Mount Rawung, Cast Java. Rsi Markandiya was a yogi from India who had meditated in East Java since unknown times. While he was meditating, a supernatural voice told him to go to the island together with his people.

A tragic incident occurred while he and his people were in the island which he named Pulau Dawa. Pulau means island and Dawa means long. Rsi's people worked hard to prepare the land for cultivation, but some wild animals and a strange epidemic killed so many of them. The tragedy made the Maha Yogi fall into desperation and he went back to Mount Rawung only to return to the Pulau Dawa after sometime had passed.

The second time, he came to Pulau Dawa with some people from the village of Aga near Mount Rawung. On the island, a ritual was always held before they started work. Markandiya also held a ritual called Panca Datu, using 5 instruments which were made of gold, silver, bronze, metal and red diamond. He named the area of the ritual as Basuki which means bless. Nowadays, the area is popularly known as Besakih.

The people from Aga village are now called the Bali Aga, Bali from the word Wali means holy sacrifice and Aga means mountain. Rsi Markandiya organized his people and taught them farming and organized a social system. Therefore the civilization on the island started in a sacred place at the foot of Mount Agung where the temple complex stands majestically today.

Besakih is an extensive complex with 23 temples, the largest temple inside the complex is Pura Penataran Agung that is dedicated to Shiva. then there are Pura Kiduling Kreteg, representing Brahma, the Creator and Pura Batu Madeg, representing Visnu, the Preserver. Those three manifestations of God are known as Tri Murti.

Besides those temples there are also temples representing Panca Dewata, 5 God's manifestations that protect 4 directions and the center. On the right and left side of Pura Penataran Agung, there are clusters of temples called pedarman where people come to pray and give offerings for their ancestors.

The complex is vast and hilly. So it really is necessary to get a guide who is capable and has good knowledge about the temple otherwise you will not really appreciate it. Since there are so many things one can observe and appreciate in the temple complex. For example, one can marvel at the carvings which tell some epic stories such as Ramayana and Mahabrata which decorate the temple traditional architecture and the Kamasan style paintings which are very old.

Please note that tourists are not allowed inside the temple itself.

The best time to visit Besakih is in the early morning or late evening when the breeze, the quiet environment and the superb view down to the coast add so much to the ambience of the complex. Besides, during those times not so many people are in the temple and the crowds of 'guides'calling themselves'temple guardians; who usually convince tourists to go around under their guidance, are not yet roaming around the temple complex. So, one may have a hassle free tour!

The temple is located in Klungkung Regency and is the inheritance for all Balinese. Besakih has its own unique charm and it is believed that the temple area is filled with mystical supernatural power. In 1963, when Mount Agung erupted, Besakih was the only place which survived the lava even though it nestles at the very foot of the mountain. It is the dream of every Balinese to pray and give offerings in the temple, which has very important role in the history of Balinese civilization. Believe it or not, there are some Balinese who have never set foot in Besakih in their lifetime, but there is no reason for you to miss this wonderful experience as most tour operators have good guided tours to the complex.

Ubud

Ubud is one of the most fascinating and picturesque villages in Bali. It seems that the traditional Balinese lifestyle has been able to coincide with the many tourists visiting the little village. While travelers walk around amazed about Ubud's beauty, the local people are still able to do their daily tasks such as placing offerings along the roads and on the paths, or going to the many ceremonies that are held to honor the gods.

I can imagine that once you arrive in this village and you have little time, you will find it difficult to decide what to do; there are just too many sights to see. So to ensure you will experience the wonders that Ubud offers, here are the 5 activities that you can do during a full day there. So go to bed early to prepare for a full day of cultural overdose...

Morning activity: Morning market

First of all, a thing that should be seen and experienced is the morning market. Early in the morning local people head to the market to buy the things they need for the day. This can include fruit and vegetables, but also flowers and flower petals for their decorations and offerings. It is even possible to buy a full bag of ready made offerings, so no hassle with that anymore.

To see this colorful spectacle you do need to wake up early. If you are there by 6.30am the market is already out and about, so you will see enough action that will wake you up immediately. At the market you can buy delicious cakes and fruits too. This will be a good addition to your breakfast at the hotel.

The Monkey Forest

Once you have returned to your hotel and have enjoyed your breakfast, head to the Monkey Forest where you can meet the 300 macaque monkeys up close. The forest is located on the south part of Monkey Forest Road. At the entrance you can buy peanuts or bananas for the monkeys. These monkeys will eagerly wait for their treat, so be careful if they jump on you once they have spotted the goodies.

You can walk all around the forest and across an ancient looking bridge supported by a big banyan tree. There are several temples located there as well which are used during cremation ceremonies. Each village in Bali has their own temple of the death. Here it is located in the Monkey forest. Common characteristics of such temples are statues of the Rangda, the goddess of the death. Her statues show Rangda with bulging eyes, sharp fangs, long finger nails and her lolling tongue.

Afternoon activity: ARMA-museum

From the Monkey Forest you can head over to the Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA). This beautifully set museum exhibits a wide range of Balinese paintings from the past till present. Here you are given the opportunity to see the many different styles and their changes through time.

In the past painters made paintings for the temples only. This style is known as Kamasan style and is characterized by long canvases covered with paintings about religious stories and myths. With the influence of foreigners, especially Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet who settled in this inspiring village, the style of painting changed. Balinese started to paint the Balinese daily life. This is known as the Ubud style.

Other influences followed which resulted into the Young Artist style. This style is known for its childish and colorful way of painting.

Rice field walk around Campuan area

In the Northern part of the village, around the Campuan area you can find the rice fields which Bali is famous for. The best time to see stunning views of the rice fields is in the late afternoon. There is an ideal path to walk on that starts at the end of the narrow road Jln. Kajeng and ends at the Campuan temple.

During the 1.5 hour walk you will be able to see many rice farmers at work, men and women enjoying the shade, children flying the kite and many ducks wobbling along the narrow paths. These animals are part of the scene as their droppings provide fertilizers and they eat the pests found in the fields. You will also notice many shrines standing in the field. These are used by the farmers, who place offerings for the rice-goddess Dewi Sri to ensure a successful rice yield.

Evening activity: Performances

Every evening there are many cultural performances. Often, a specific location has another program each day. So if one location does not have the performance planned which you are hoping to see, there are many others that might have it scheduled that day.

The ticket sellers, who are found along the streets all over Ubud, always know when and where the performances are. In their bag they have all the tickets of the performances for that night, so you can just choose on the spot and pay. There are also tickets for sale at the tourist information office at Jalan Raya, who put out signs about the performances every day.

The tickets for the performances are usually Rp.50.000 each but some performance can be slightly more expensive. The performances start at 19.00 and 20.00 at the latest.

The most regular dances that you can choose from are: Legong Dances, Kecak Fire Dance, Women Gamelan and Dance Group, Barong and Keris, Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet) and Jegog (Bamboo Gamelan). One thing that is worth mentioning is that ARMA museum is the only place to see the Topeng Jimat performance. ARMA also has Kecak performances but only during every full moon and new moon making the setting even more appropriate.

Ubud has many restaurants and cafés that are beautifully decorated and some even have an amazing tropical garden. So to finish the day, stroll to one of these many restaurants, sit, relax and recollect all the amazing things of your day.

Tanah Lot

Tanah Lot is located in the village Beraban or 13 km west of Tabanan. Tanah Lot is almost always offered by every tour guide in Bali to visit. There are two temples are located on a large rock. One is located on the boulder and the other is located on the cliffs similar to Uluwatu Temple. Tanah Lot temple is a sea temple which is functioned as a place of worship to the gods who guard the sea.

Tanah Lot: The Tanah Lot Temple prides, braving the time since 15th century. This monument sits on a large offshore rock on the Balinese coast. This is also the most popular tourist temple. Tanah Lot area is a commercialized zone where tourists need to pay to get an entry into the temple.

When the sun is setting creating a the mixture of magenta and orange colors on the sky and the tide rises, the beauty of Tanah Lot is a very spectacular sight.

The temple is one of the seven famous sea temples in Bali. It is said that each of these temples was to be within eyesight of the next and were made to give a level of protection to the island. Dated in16th century, the shrine was built by Dang Hyang Nirartha (a priest from Java) during his travels through south-west coast of Bali. He saw a small island nearby the main land where spent the night. The next morning he asked the local fisherman to build a shrine to worship God of the Sea on the rock as he felt a holy atmosphere on the rocky island.

Tanah Lot means Land in the Middle of the Sea, is part of Tabanan Regency in the western part of Bali. It is only 33 km from Denpasar. I took the Canggu route because the line of rice fields on both sides of the road is beautiful. Otherwise there is also another route passing the Ubung bus terminal heading to West Bali and turn left at the roundabout in Kediri.

In 1998, I first visited the temple. At that time I could see the temple from the road side before I enter the parking area. This time when I revisited the temple, I could see nothing from the main road because the area has been commercialized and developed. Some hotels were built due to market demand. Every visitor and car has to pay for entrance. I had to walk to the temple area where before in those passed years we could park our vehicle next to the seashore. The lines of handicraft sellers on the way to the temple are arranged orderly in one space and also on both sides of the pedestrian track to the temple.

The temple is considered as one of the most sacred places in Bali. It is not accessible to visitors but reserved for pilgrimage only. However, superb views of the temple backed by the glowing sunset can be seen from so many points nearby. There is a line of souvenir shops and also a line of cafes where Es Kelapa Muda (Fresh young coconut with ice) and a variety of food and beverages are served. Some cafes even have panoramic sunset views from their terrace. When it is ebb tide, the crowd usually is centered at the beach between the rock where the temple is laid and the cliff of the mainland.

The caves which form part of the cliff also become another famous attraction in the site. It is said that a giant snake lives in one of the caves. It is also believed that at the base of the rocky island there are poisonous sea snakes guarding the temple from evil spirits and intruders. The myth said that the snake was the scarf of Nirartha.

Well sometimes when the tide rises the rocky island and the main land are separated by water, and boats are the only way for the pilgrimage to reach the temple. High tide or ebb tide, the beautiful setting is always there. The small rocky island looks like a huge boat with a shrine and trees on it anchored to the seabed in the vast ocean during high tide.

The metamorphosis of the surrounding area of Tanah Lot hopefully won't detract from the classical beauty of the historic temple. The magnificent view of the temple in the evening color continues to be the most popular printed on postcards. The temple is one of Bali's prominent icons.

Tanjung Benoa

Tanjung Benoa, otherwise known as Benoa Peninsula, is one of the most prominent attractions in Indonesia, situated on the Bali's south-eastern coast. Once a small typical fishing village, the destination has now been transformed into one of the most sought after beach resorts in Indonesia. Located to the north of Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa is a picturesque five kilometer long peninsula, boasting of a breathtaking landscape consisting of gorgeous white sandy beach, majestic mountains, and incredible coconut plantations.

Further, Tanjung Benoa is only minutes away from some of the most tourist spots in Bali. For instance, it is just 15 minutes drive away from Kuta and about 25 minutes drive from Sanur. Tanjung Benoa is connected by a narrow bustling road packed with a plethora of upscale hotels, private villas, first class restaurants, and elegant open air restaurants.

The prime draw of Tanjung Benoa is unquestionably its stupendous beach with clean safe waters. The beach is truly a mecca for enjoying a number of water sport activities, from parasailing, wind surfing, and jet skiing to snorkeling, banana boat sailing, and reef fishing. Additionally, the beach provides excellent facilities for diving enthusiasts, with a number of certified diving centers. Apart from these, a plethora of shops operate here in order to make you available all types of rental equipments for enjoying several water sport activities.

But, attractions as well as activities that can be enjoyed in Tanjung Benoa are not just beach and its area, but beyond that. Tanjung Benoa also contains a number of other interesting tourist spots. A visit to the destination would not to be complete without taking a tour to Batubulan, a serene as well as calm village which is well-known for its stone carvings.

You can find here a large number of statues displayed in the street starting from Batubulan village to Tegaltamu. Apart from these stone statues, Batubulan is also renowned for its magnificent shrines. Of which, the most popular is Pura Paseh, which is noted for its exquisite art and architecture. The temple is just few blocks away from the main road. Further, Batubulan provides options to shop items such as textiles, handicraft and carved items, and traditional clothing items. There are also some shops conducting traditional Balinese performances such as Barong and Rangda dances.

Nearby Batubulan village is yet another popular tourist spot, namely, Taman Burung, which is an incredible park. Situated to the north of Tegaltamu, Taman Burung is spread across about two hectares of land, and is home to more than 1000 birds of about 250 different species, which in turn are collected from different parts of the world. Birds of paradise, African Hornbill, Bali Starling, Blue and Gold Macaw, and flamingos are just few among the specialties found here.

Also, within in this bird park is a reptile park, with an amazing collection of reptiles that have been primarily collected from different regions of Africa and Indonesia. Among the residents here are piton snake, monitor lizard, komodo, mega snakes, and crocodiles. A fine restaurant and several gift shops can also be found within the park. In short, with these rare bird and reptile species, the park is really worth a visit.

Points of interest in Tanjung Benoa also include the Bali Golf and Country Club, which is in turn is Asia's one of the most popular golf courses. Equally fabulous would be to take a tour to the quiet port, with village-like atmosphere. Likewise, spiritual travelers should not miss to take a tour to the Chinese Buddhist Temple found here. Further, while your stay at Tanjung Benoa, take a tour to Serangan, otherwise known as Turtle Island. The focal point of this spot is a temple dating back to 16th century.

Above all, Tanjung Benoa is much famed for its world class restaurants serving sumptuous sea food specialties.

When comes to accommodation, Tanjung Benoa allows guests to choose from an array of accommodation choices. As mentioned earlier, many of the hotels in the area are concentrated around the beach area. Many of the hotels and resorts in the area come with a range of options such as double rooms, single rooms, and villas, all of which are attached with amenities such as air conditioning, direct dial telephone, iron and ironing board, television, in-room safe, king-size bed, and round the clock room service. In addition, some of the most sophisticated hotels offer a variety of dining options such as daily theme buffet dinner, beach restaurants, and relaxing bars.

Uluwatu

From the top of the cliff that towers above the legendary surf breaks of Southern Bali, I could see the turquoise water smash on the rocks and enter the caves which were used by the Japanese to defend Bali from the allies military attack at the end of world war II. Dramatic and soundless as the waves are so far below.

Uluwatu (ulu means land's end and watu means rock, so it is not to hard to see where Uluwatu came from), is about 45 minutes drive from Nusa Dua or one and half hour drive from Kuta. And comprises jungles, cliffs, and the vast deep blue ocean. The southern tip of Bali is rightly famous for its magical sunset at the temple located right at the edge of the majestic sea cliffs.

I arrived at the temple around five in the evening, my mission to see its famous sunset. There is an official entrance fee to enter, sarongs are available for rental next to the ticket-window and must be worn to comply with the temple rules. I followed the track till the end then turned right to the edge of a cliff, and there it was the temple perched on the edge of the cliff on my right side. The sky was overcast but there was some rays of light streaking out from narrow gaps between the dark grey clouds. Hundreds of meters below, the Indian Ocean reflected the dying sun light, on its soundless waves. As the sun went down, the scene became even more dramatic.

Uluwatu temple, its correct name is Pura Luhur Uluwatu, is one of the Sad Khayangan the six most important temples in Bali. It is dedicated to Rudra, the God of the Storm, the Wind, and the Hunt, and is one of those that Pedanda Sak'i Wawu Rauh, a priest from Java who came to Bali in A.D. 1546, built The temple and its surroundings are considered as one of the very sacred sites in the island.

The deep blue ocean surrounds the majestic cliffs on the sea side but the natural forest is also still there on the land side. When I walked through the jungle path, I was struck by really bad smell, nauseating in fact, later on I found out that the jungle is home to a number of Rafflessia arnoldii, giant flowers which grow close to the soil and spread the smell of rotting flesh when it is blooming. Little did I know how privileged I was!.

The natural jungle is also home for some families of monkey. Precautionary signs have been put at a few places to remind visitors about their aggressiveness. The ticket officer and even my driver also reminded me of the same thing. I didn't experience any problems with the monkeys because I hid my glasses and accessories in my bag, but I did see how the"monkey scam"works. One Japanese tourist was concentrating to get shots of the temple when a monkey came and quickly snatched his specs. A local man came to help, approaching the monkey with fruit to be exchanged with the specs. He didn't ask for anything from the unlucky Japanese but another approached the tourist and told him to give the "hero"some money for his services. Could it be this wasn't a real accident but a bit of monkey business? The reason I am telling you is just to remind you to be careful.

But now the real action starts on this marvelous spot. It is the Kecak Fire Dance. The performance started at 6pm. the half circle wooden theater was full of people, the evening sunlight was peeping from behind the dark grey clouds, and part of the sky not covered by cloud slowly turned fire red itself. It was a marvelous sight. Then more then twenty men entered the stage while creating a mesmerizing chant. Cak..cak...cakcakcak...! The magic had started.

The southern part of Bali with its dramatic rocky peninsula, remains a must visit site, even though the thick grey cloud hung on the sky covering the sun through the evening, my visit was still wonderful. The darkness of the night finally fell when the show over. Mission accomplished.

Jimbaran Beach

Jimbaran Beach

Jimbaran Beach is a sleepy cove where fleets of fishing boats colour the scene. With a slower pace than Kuta and a relaxed friendly atmosphere, the shores of Jimbaran provide a peaceful respite. The perfectly shaped bay is also spared the crashing waves of nearby beaches, providing a safe haven for leisurely swimming.

Jimbaran is a popular spot for windsurfing and sailing small craft. Jimbaran's grey sand and calm waters are attracting more people but the beach still has a sleepy feeling. It is also popular spot for watching the sunset and eating the fresh seafood.

Jimbaran Bay beaches are lined with wonderful places to stay from hotels to traditional villas, the standard of hotel that you will find here is mid range to 5 star Bali accommodation. As with all more expensive places to stay in Bali the service that you can expect in Jimbaran is unrivaled. All the Jimbaran Bay hotels will supply what are basic facilities for these kinds of establishments; air conditioning, in house restaurants, bars and twenty-four hour room service will be the standard package and the private service you can expect will become more quality orientated as the rates increase. Just minutes from the beach there is some more secluded hillside accommodation that offers better views and more private facilities. Hotels all offer shuttle services for you to go to the beach or visit Kuta which is only five minutes drive away.

Although there remains the presence of local fisherman staying here, Jimbaran Bay budget accommodation is sparse and is more customized to the up market tourist, with the dearer resorts offering private swimming pools, and as you travel a little more south or north, personal beaches. All hotels are fantastically landscaped with tropical gardens that are highly well kept and presented. Bali has always created hotels and villas that have outstanding views and superb services and Jimbaran resorts provide all that may be expected from quality Balinese hospitality.

Jimbaran is situated in the south not far from Bali International airport, where all Bali flights land. Though this is an extremely well liked vacation destination it hasn't become as commercial as the other places in Bali. Almost all of the beach resorts that have sprung up along the coast of Bali were little fishing villages at one point, that have changed into giant commercial visitor attractions. All of these resorts have left behind their fishing history and concentrate absolutely on tourism as a source of income.

Staying in one of the Jimbaran Bay hotels is a novel experience as the village, though aimed at tourism, has still kept its fishing industry and it isn't uncommon to see the fisherman on the beach with their traditional fishing boats and nets. The town itself is also a mix of the old and the new. Almost all of the other places to stay in Bali have a beach covered with cafes, bars, clubs and shops that are a hundred percent for the use of tourists. Jimbaran is a fabulous place to stay as the main strip is still suggestive of an Indonesian town that has not been exploited by the tourist industry. Walking along here you will find food stalls and other facilities that are essentially used by the local Balinese fishing community.

Jimbaran beach is a long beach with the dazzling white sand that Bali is famous for with flat water all year long. The mix of native and holiday maker dwellings makes it an energetic and engaging place to stay, the architecture though principally consisting of traveler resorts and hotels is also jumbled in with the local inhabitants traditional dwellings. It's a pity, but as the visitor industry grows, this tranquil town will doubtless go the way of the other preferred destinations and it will not be too long before the colorful fishing boats of the fisherman are not lining the beach.
